Diasporic walking sticks

چکیده
As John Berger and Jean Mohr pointed out in The Seventh Man [5] an arresting photographic essay of European migrant labour in the 1970s the incapacitated and dying migrant is a murky presence within capitalism’s unconscious. Parodying the mounting tension between the global demand for healthy aspirational migrant workers and the responsibility for their long term well-being and care, Berger wrote “So far as the economy of the metropolitan country is concerned, migrant workers are immortal: immortal because continually interchangeable. They are not born: they are not brought up and they do not age: they do not get tired: they do not die.”

The effect of walking sticks on balance in geriatric subjects
[Purpose] Guidelines and clarity regarding the information for deciding the need for walking sticks and the suitability of these sticks is insufficient. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of walking stick and its effects on the balance in the elderly. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 39 elderly subjects aged between 65-95 years (mean age, 76.15 ± 8.35 years) and living in the Residen...
متن کاملEvolution: Anti-speciation in Walking Sticks
The interplay between selection and genetic exchange at a color locus between populations of Timema walking sticks acts as an anti-speciation phenotype. This actively counteracts speciation and offers a general mechanism to explain the porous nature of species boundaries.
متن کاملFall Avoidance and Recovery for Bipedal Robots using Walking Sticks
For humanoid robots to replace humans in dangerous environments, they require a robust fall prevention system that can detect falls, prevent major damage and recover back up to continue on with the task. This paper introduces a system that is capable of fall detection, mitigation and recovery in a robot equipped with walking sticks. Walking sticks allow the humanoid robot to extend its support ...
متن کاملLearning Articulated Skeletons from Motion
Humans demonstrate a remarkable ability to parse complicated motion sequences into their constituent structures and motions. We investigate this problem, attempting to learn the structure of one or more articulated objects, given a time-series of feature positions. We model the observed sequence in terms of “stick figure” objects, under the assumption that the relative joint angles between stic...
متن کاملEco-Evolutionary Dynamics: Community Consequences of (Mal)Adaptation
Contemporary evolution can shape ecological dynamics at population, community and ecosystem levels. Innovative new experiments with walking sticks confirm this expectation by showing that adaptation to predatory birds has large effects on walking stick population sizes, arthropod communities and herbivory.
